On one dark, dark, night the grade one students of IREC met up with one of the scary creatures you see on the wall! As an introduction to our Visualization Unit, that the grade 1 team planned together, students listened to a descriptive story about meeting a monster in the woods. They then worked in groups to create different body parts based on the information they got from the story. We put all of the parts together to create a collective visualization of the monster! All of the grade one classes got together to compare the similarities and differences between all of the monsters. It was a great project to build cooperative learning as well as reflection of the final product.
In the beginning lessons on reading primarily focus on modeling and identifying reading behaviors. Focusing first on what readers do, prepares children for learning how they do it. "Reading with Meaning," by Debbie Miller Our students have been reading detectives, watching closely and reporting back to us what they notice about readers. Take a look at what they have discovered. To establish a sense of purpose in our classroom so our students understand why it's important to come to school everyday and work hard, we have spent a lot of time sharing our ideas to build a class promise that every one understands and sees the value of its language. The content within our class promise is to help children understand the many purposes of their learning and to develop greater meaning in the choices they make at school and how those can impact our class community.

For showing leadership when you are Proactive. Vincent, we know that reading is important to you and we see you working hard at this goal. You practice your reading each night and have already read more than 60 books! We are proud to celebrate you as a leader today! Ms.VanMaarion & Mrs.Quance As a class we have been working very hard on establishing class routines that are consistent, fair, and agreed upon by all members of the class; students and teachers. We are very proud of the effort our students are making to be responsible and respectful citizens of our class. They are starting to understand the value of being an active member of our classroom to support their learning, and recognize how the choices they make can impact the learning environment of their peers. We know that this year will be an outstanding year in grade one. We have a remarkable group of students that are eager to learn and ready to be challenged. We recently enjoyed reading the book "David Goes To School" , which opened up a great discussion about our rights at school. Our students brainstormed some thoughtful rules that support our student rights at school: 1) the right to learn, 2) the right to be happy and 3) the right to feel safe. You can read through their ideas and enjoy their fabulous art work in the slide show below. Ms.VanMaarion & Mrs.Quance The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books you choose, on your just-right reading level. During read to self time our students have been working on: choosing a good spot to read, reading the whole time to build their stamina, keeping their eyes in the book and not letting distractions get in the way of their reading, and remaining quiet the whole time. |
